“Straddling a line between contemporary opera with hints of jazz, Atkins’ music enhances her (Walker’s) words with sensitivity, moving seamlessly between prose and rhyme, occasionally soaring with a burst of emotion…Original, thought-provoking, and genuinely moving”

NEWS
February 2026.
Joe is participating in the inaugural Queerscore Festival, which will be taking place across the weekend of the 10 - 12 April. He will reprising his cabaret song cycle collaboration, Scene Unseen, with Jessica Walker, as well as a work-in-progress performance of If It Be Sin, new settings of homoromantic verse by Early Modern poet, Richard Barnfield, in collaboration with Dr Will Tosh, author of the acclaimed Straight Acting: The Many Queer Lives of William Shakespeare. Both of these shows will take place on 11 April at Hoxton Hall.
He is also musical director and arranger for Rutgers Conservatory’s upcoming production of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus taking place this month at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
In August, following the success of Joseph’s latest collaboration with writer and singer Jessica Walker, La Solitude, a solo show exploring the life and songs of French singer-songwriter Barbara, the pair recorded a new album of Barbara’s songs for Resonus Classics, joined by the Solem Quartet and saxophonist Megan Glover.
He was also Composer and Musical Director for the RSC’s Next Generation production of Timon of Athens, which played at the RSC’s Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon.
He is also currently writing a new musical with playwright Christopher Adams, an adaption of Adam de Hegedus’ novel The Heart in Exile, the first published queer detective story.

EVENTS
“The songs…retain a distinctively French flavor, bolstered by the music director Joseph Atkins on piano and accordion. The numbers are so good, in fact, that you wish there were more.”
